View All FIP WarriorsLeo was rescued with her 4 siblings in 2018 from under cinderblocks. Her entire litter had severe upper respiratory infections. I took them home and treated them. All but Leo were vaccinated, spayed and neutered by their 6 month birthdays. She was always the quiet one...the one I worried about. She would have her spay surgery a couple months later.
I suspected Leo may have had FIP. Her abdomen seemed to swell within a few days. I made an appointment to confirm my suspicions: Leo was diagnosed with wet FIP on May 18, 2021 just three days after we lost our alpha cat, Tucker, and one day before the one year anniversary of my father's passing. I remember standing outside the exam room as the vet palpated her abdomen thinking to myself, please tell me I am wrong. The vet had the telltale look of woe...the look of your cat is going to die...
While the vet did an ultrasound, I went on social media where I had read of a treatment. I reached out to some rescue folks and they recommended FIP Warriors 5.0 on Facebook. Before we left the vet's office, I had already messaged an admin and had set up a gofundme page to get some initial funding. By the next day, labwork confirmed Leo did indeed have wet FIP and I was on my way to purchase our first few bottles of GS thanks to some initial donations!
Our vet kept reiterating, Leo has FIP...there is no cure...there is a black market drug but it comes from China and it is 80% ineffective.
As the weeks went on our vet began to ask more questions. Where did you get this medication? What is the dosing? What is the Facebook group's name? Who is the vet responsible for this research? His disbelief was now dispelled. He wanted to know everything!
As the weeks went on, employees at the vet kept saying, this cat has FIP. Look how good she looks! It's amazing! The vet was amazed by what he was seeing. The labwork was all he needed to see FIP was no longer a death sentence. Cats have a fighting chance with GS.
I have been in animal care for over 25 years, 7 of those years as a vet technician. FIP was a death sentence. It no longer is thanks to research.
Leo is now in observation and doing remarkably well! I am grateful beyond words! I am grateful to Dr. Pederson and SockFIP.org, to FIP warrior support groups, to Zenbycat, to my friends, to my donors and to our vet and staff. I am grateful I went back to work shortly after Leo's diagnosis.
Fighting FIP is quite a battle, one fought with an army of support and an arsenal of love. The victory is like nothing I have ever experienced. It took Leo a couple of weeks to realize she could relax now and enjoy her life. Paws crossed we won this battle for good!
