FIP Warrior:

Cole

We were getting ready to leave for NC for a very long trip and my cat, Cole had finally just refused to eat anything. He had been getting pickier and pickier but now he completely stopped eating. Our vet could not see him before we had to leave so we went to the veterinary ER. Because of Covid, I could not go in with him. They did LOTS of (expensive) tests. The diagnosis? Either lymphoma, FIP or IBD. They told us to go to the specialists at Blue Pearl. They also gave us appetite stimulants. So we made an appointment and waited for someone to see him. Again, alone. Dr Young was amazing. He did a lot of tests and he really thought it was lymphoma. After asking a friend of mine who's cat had gone through FIP treatment and doing some online research, I was convinced he had FIP. I got involved in the FIP Warriors group, got and admin and got GS sent while waiting to get in to see Dr Young for some more tests. I was CONVINCED it was not lymphoma. He told me the only way to diagnose FIP was an intestinal biopsy but if we had the GS to just go ahead and start it. He said, if it worked we would know it was FIP and not Lymphoma (which truly is a death sentence). Cole was SO thin but had begun to eat a little with the medicine to stimulate his appetite. Once the GS arrived I began the daily shots. I have worked in biomedical research for over 40 years and just retired the month before. I have given many injections to animals over the course of that time but dosing my own beloved cat was still difficult. The shots HURT. We were packing our fifth wheel to leave to go from MI to NC for the birth of our first grandchild. Once we arrived in NC and the baby was born I was driving 40 minutes each way to help with the baby and then go back to the camper to give Cole his injections. It was so nerve wracking for both of us. My husband would hold him and I would inject. My husband is very needle phobic so it was traumatic for him too. Some times I would inject Cole by myself and he was really good for me when I had to do that. Within a few days, his spark returned and he could not get enough to eat! I fed him anytime he asked and he asked a LOT! We had to find a vet in NC as I ended up staying there for the whole time he was being treated and in most of observation. Luckily the Warriors were able to suggest a vet very close to where we were that was willing to see him. Again, without me. His blood work was improving every month and he was gaining weight!! It was a very scary time. You second guess everything and pray your baby will be cured. Once the shots were done, it was even more scary. What if there is a relapse? Thankfully, he came through it all with flying colors! He went from 5 pounds to a whopping 12 pounds with normal bloodwork!! He was considered cured in March of 2021. I thank God every day for the gift of GS and the FIP Warriors group. Without them he would not be here. I hope and pray that this lifesaving medicine becomes available to everyone in the future and at a cost that people can afford. Cole is here and thriving and I could not be happier! Love, Pam and Cole
