FIP Warrior:

Pecan

I adopted Pecan from a local rescue in July 2023 when she was just 3 months old. I originally went to see one of her littermates, but when I arrived, Pecan laid in my lap, climbed up my shoulder and wanted all of the pets. I took her home and within days she had developed an infection from her spay surgery that was completed prior to adoption. She had to have surgery again and she recovered in 10 days! She was doing well, but then weekly developed an upper respiratory infection. Her first sign of this was her eye - she very obviously had pink eye. She was put on medication and she recovered! This occurred 2 more times, recovering each time. Around the Thanksgiving holiday, Pecan’s right eye suddenly started changing colors. Due to her age, I thought this may be normal and her eye was changing colors. I took her to vet because her eye reflected differently. She was diagnosed with glaucoma. After several visits and many medications, Pecan’s eye pressure was not relieved. The best option was to opt for enucleation surgery and send her eye for biopsy. So we did. Pecan had her surgery right before the Christmas holiday and recovered safely at home. A couple of weeks later, her left eye began changing colors. I took her to the vet and her eye pressure was normal, though she had a fever and she had lost weight. She was diagnosed with another upper respiratory infection and given medication. Within days, she did not get better. She had lost even more weight and anemic with the fever still present and eye discoloration. The vet recommended bloodwork and we were left with three possible diagnosis: FIP, FIV, or FeLV. That same day, the vet also let me know that her results from the biopsy indicated no cancer, though there was an infection but it was unsure what kind. The next business day, I got a call stating they were 90% sure Pecan had FIP. It was recommended to keep her comfortable and monitor her quality of life. I googled and researched for a support group for kitties with FIP and families to aid in my anticipated grief.

That’s when I came across FIP Warriors. By pure luck I had found a way to potentially cure my kitty. I contacted admin right away and the rest was history.

I often think about why. Why was Pecan the one that got FIP? But then I remember that Pecan chose me in that adoption room. She knew I would do everything I could to give her a fighting chance. And I plan to continue doing that!
