A very close friend and fellow ZenByCat board member purchased several of the Smokey prints by Joe Average as gifts. She attached the words below to the backs of the framed prints. I like her words an so decided to share them:).
“The Boy Who Lived”
This portrait, painted by Canadian artist Joe Average and commissioned by Peter Cohen of Zen By Cat, is of Smokey who was diagnosed with wet FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) in July 2016.
Through determination and luck, Smokey was admitted into an FIP drug trial at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine run by Dr. Neils Pedersen, a longstanding and internationally recognized FIP researcher.
Days away from death, Smokey began the grueling three month long treatment. Twice daily, this kitten received painful injections of a protease inhibitor specifically designed to prevent the FIP virus from attacking his body.
We celebrated Smokey’s final injection on October 25th, 2016. Regular blood tests consistently show that he remains FIP free, and as of this writing, is just past his 8th month of complete remission, one of the longest FIP remissions to date.
Smokey continues to thrive in the company of the 22 cats at the House of Nekko and stands proudly as an FIP Survivor.
50% of the proceeds from the sale of this print are donated by the artist, Joe Average, to ZenByCat.org, an organization which raises funds for FIP research.
